“John Wood Ski Trip”

“John Wood Ski Trip”
February 17, 2012

At 6 a.m. a bus load of John Wood students were headed off to Andalusia, IL. Doughnuts and juice were provided for the students to get some energy for the adventures that lay ahead.  While some of the students chose to go back to sleep (like myself) others stayed awake to watch “We Are Marshall”. After a three hour drive we finally made it to our destination, Snow Star! After the group was checked in and got the appropriate equipment, we split up. The more experienced skiers were able to head out to the slopes and get their day started while the less experienced or new skiers (me) were given lessons. These lessons were very helpful! The first time I glided down the bunny hill, I realized I didn’t know how to stop until I got to the bottom and just kept going. I yelled “I can’t stop!” and the others laughed. Eventually I got the hang of it and before I knew it, I was floating along with ease. After I had mastered the bunny hill, my boyfriend, Lance and I decided it was time for us to head over to the other hills. I was very hesitant at first and watched while others went down the hills but eventually I worked up courage and soared down the hills. It was a great rush of adrenaline! Throughout the day I fell a lot, but I’d just laugh as I would struggle to regain my balance again. It was a great experience! At about 3 p.m. we all loaded on our bus once again and headed back home.  We watched “Eight Seconds” but once again, I slept during the trip. It had been a great day and I would hop on the opportunity to do that again any day!

Transferring

For most John Wood students, transferring is a common topic. The process starts by sitting down with your advisor and mapping out what classes you need to take to get on the right track. It is also important to have in mind where you think you may want to transfer to make sure the classes you take and credits you earn will all transfer.

I am majoring in exercise science and plan to transfer to Western Illinois University. When I first sat down with my advisor, Mrs. McLaughlin, she told me what classes I needed to take to get me started toward the career that I desire. My first semester, I took a HPR (Health, Physical Education and Recreation) class as well as a general biology class. This semester, I am enrolled in an anatomy and physiology I class. When signing up for classes it was made aware to me that I would also have to take the anatomy and physiology II class during the summer before I could enroll into the WIU classes and pick up where I am leaving off from John Wood. Last month I went and toured the campus at Western. I was pleasantly surprised! I am most excited about the rec center and the kinesiology building that was expanded last year. My transcripts were sent from my high school and from the first semester at John Wood and now all that is left is for me to go to WIU and sign up for my classes for next fall!
